I usually enjoy Leo Waterman's antics and thoroughly recommend them for a fun, lighthearted and fast read. This book, however, left a lot to be desired, in my opinion. As Leo is hired to safeguard the opening of the first international restaurant convention in America, the book makes more detours than the streets of Seattle where it is placed. It doesn't seem to have the clearly plotted story line that the other books I have read of this series have. As an example, poor Bunky, a grand-champion Black Angus bull, was the central controversial theme. He was a 4-H project raised by Miss Meyerson's daughter and bought at auction by Mr. Del Fuego/ These two own competing steak houses. Mr. Del Fuego insists on roasting Bunky as a public spectacle for Del Fuego's Steaklot in an effort to get back at Abigail Meyerson of Abby's Angus for what he perceives as her attempt to ruin his chain of businesses. Leo is given a "bovine bounty" to save Bunky and keep this controversy from upsetting the convention. This being the central theme of this book. Since it was the theme, I am still perplexed as to what happened to Bunky. He was last seen as he was led down one of Seattle's main streets by Leo Bunky was then on a "leash" being led away from the planned barbeque, of which he was advertised as the main course. Bunky just disappeared from the story line. Since he WAS the story line, why not complete it? Of course, the barbeque and its subsequent ending was worth some laughs, but still, poor Bunky's ending was never completed. Anyway, this was one of Mr. Ford's less successfully written books. Since I think enough of them to actually buy, I would recommend the reader to wait until this one is offered for a substantial reduction in price... preferably for free. As I said, I do enjoy this series, but just not this particular book.Tags : Slow Burn (Leo Waterman Mysteries) [G.M. Ford] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. G.M. Slow Burn Leo Waterman Mysteries GM Ford 9780380793679 Books Reviews
Loved the book, as I did all of the Leo Waterman books. A fun quick read with a cast of characters that is unique and well developed. Not the type of book for those that are looking for something mentally stimulating and pensive, but just a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing read. I especially like Ford's sense of sarcasm and irony as well as the way he puts it into words.
Can't wait for the next book in the series!
Had a little trouble following this one but old Leo kept me reading. The barbecue scene was so descriptive felt like I was there! Still laughing over that.
I have loved the series and will continue to read it, BUT...this was by far the worst of the series. SLOW BURN is the fourth Leo Waterman mysteries by G. M. Ford. Waterman is hired to provide security at a foods convention where expected rivalries will be bad. Waterman gets his crusty old crew to help ans away we go. But for this reviewer it just never got off the ground, but plodded slowly to "who cares." Like the series and the characters but this one missed. On to book five.
I surely love these books. I am delighted to find entries in this series I hadn't read. Leo has matured (some) with the series, but remains entertaining and endearing. Good stuff.
I've now read and enjoyed all of Ford's Leo Waterman mysteries. He writes with a great sense of humor, his characters are perfectly cast and his stories are both entertaining and easy to read. For anyone living in, or who has lived in Seattle (I haven't and don't) his in depth knowledge of the area is a definite plus so far as making the novels interesting.
This series of novels may not be great literature or intellectually challenging, but they are great reads and real entertainment. I suspect too that whomever the real author is he chuckles a bit and enjoys the anonymity that comes from the pseudonym GM Ford. Whoever heard of "GM Ford"!?
If you like Parker's Spenser series you'll probably like Ford's Waterman series.
This is a story of the Steak House wars, Jack Del Fuego "Feed Lot" verses Abigale Meyerson "Abby's Angus". They both want the "Golden Fork" award. Spaulding and Brie are Abigales children and Brie belongs to the 4H club and has a Bull they named "Bunky". Jack wants to Bar-B-Q Bunky. Of course the Animal Rights people get involved. Mason Reese is killed, too bad I thought he was a colorful character, but we are not at a loss for colorful characters. There is Ricky Ray Tolliver, who is into Martial Arts , so of course he is the strong arm man in the story. Then there is Bart Yonquist, working his way through medical school by working for Dixie, Jacks former wife. Jack refers to himself in the 3rd person. These are not the only colorful characters in this story. Leo finds himself in trouble with the law more than once but his street people have his back as usual and Rebecca has the patience of Job. Good Story, Good Humor, Enjoy
In some ways, this novel was a mess. Too many characters for readers to track. Too many sub-plots. Scenes added to provide continuity between other novels in the series. Scenes appearing for no reason. Bums chipping in 4/4 time. A disfigured bum added for....texture? Jokes....that appear to be for the sake of the joke and barely woven into the plot through extended metaphors.
A mess.
However, "Slow Burn" is a visually exciting, fast moving novel! There were certain aspects that reminded me of "Clue" in and extended landscape...the dinner party taken to the streets. And perhaps a bit of B-movie scripting. Apocalypse Now Meets Dallas.
I don't know why this novel works, but it does. Messy, overly-complex and thoroughly enjoyable.
I've now read all of the Leo Waterman novels. While GM Ford may not have the buzz of some of the other PI/detective writers, the Waterman series compares favorably with any of the current generation of genre novelists.
