The Bingo Queens by Mike Hoeft is an exceptional compilation of the history of Indian gaming, the evolution of gaming that has led to prosperity for the once financially suffering Oneida Indian Tribe in Wisconsin, and the tenacity of the "Bingo Queens" featured by the author. It is at once an educational experience and a tear jerker as you read about outside forces intent on shutting down tribal efforts and tribal leaders just as determined to keep them going. The tears come when you read about the women who won't stop working toward success for their people which means their families, their elders, their heritage. Hoeft has done them all proud with this thorough, touching and exacting portrait of how these Bingo Queens worked to bring their tribe out of poverty and ended up teaching tribes across Wisconsin and the nation how to do the same.

The efforts of these two women and others in the Oneida community read like a novel. I loved learning the history of the Oneida people and their gaming, as well as the factual data regarding gaming in Wisconsin. I thought it was worth reading, recommend it!
The book goes well beyond what the title implies. It is actually a good brief history of the Oneidas of Wisconsin.
