I'm a horror/ghost story fan (and a native Appalachian) and thought this book was great. Each story had enough of a suspense element to make me look forward to the end of the story. Every author did a great job of painting a picture of the people and the region. I have read the entire series and they are all keepers.
I am very disappointed in the book. A child could have made up most of the stories. They were untrue and ridiculous.
Love this book! Growing up in WV and hearing all the stories, this book just brought me back. Well written stories. Very much recommend.
I absolutely LOVE ghost stories, especially Appalachian Mountain Folklore sets, and was so thrilled to see this book on . What a disappointment. This book is just too much of a downer and weird. I suffered through half of it and just put it down. I just could not force myself to keep reading. It needs some humor badly, and a little balance, but if you are a young teen, you might absolutely love the too dark, depressing and bizarre tales.
I WON'T BE READING ANY MORE IN THE SERIES.
I regret not listening to an earlier reviewer (thinking she was being too critical) and going ahead and buying the book anyway.

There are plenty of other Appalachian Ghost Story sets out there that are wonderful. They manage to capture the scary fun that is part of the mountain tradition, plus, they preserve mountain folklore in a reverent way.
Also, for a poignant, fun, and scary set of true ghost stories, I highly recommend "The New England Ghost Files" as well.
