Papehn writing style was the first thing that struck me: she's telling a story, not leading you through it. In a world where "show don't tell" is hammered into any writer's skull, I was surprised and intrigued by this shift. At first I thought I wasn't going to like it... and then I found myself unable to put it down. There is something entrancing, seductive -- yet at the same time no-nonsense -- about the way this story is weaved. I found myself identifying with the main character Sara on WAY too many levels, and her story had me thinking about it for days afterwards. There's just something about it that gets under your skin -- in the best way possible.
The pacing was really spot on, and no-nonsense in giving you exactly what you needed, while still teasing you with what happened next. The characters really had me enthralled (only a moment here or there where I didn't quite understand the level of emotional reaction), and I felt really connected to the main protagonists. Each character really developed into feeling "real," even if I didn't understand every aspect of them.
I can't speak to the cultural representation, but I understand this story is OwnVoices. That being said, I loved getting a glimpse into Jewish and Muslim Persian culture and the tensions that exist therein. And the food!!!
Needless to say, I really recommend this. It's fresh, it's interesting, I don't think you're going to find anything really like it. This is Papehn's debut, and I'm really looking forward to what she will be writing next.

This book was one the more I read, the more I couldn't put it down. The story was told from Sara's perspective, her struggles, ups, downs and tough life decisions with regards to following her heart, or listening to her head (and her Persian family traditions). You will find yourself rooting for Sara and true love throughout the book. A definite great read!
This book highlights the heartbreaking conflict between people who fall in love of different religions. It's a soul-searching journey between the couple to decide if love can overcome all obstacles. A strong story that touches on many levels. Family, loyalty, betrayal, faith, all the elements of a deep read. Anyone who has ever been in this situation will appreciate this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Forbidden by Faith - a sweet love story where the main characters exemplify the true meaning of perseverance in their quest to be together, despite their different religious backgrounds. The wonderful details provided me with all that was necessary to envision the characters’ physical and emotional space. I loved learning about the various cultural and religious aspects as well. This book kept me so engaged and eager to find out what was going to happen next.
An important new voice in romance fiction. Faith, tradition, family these ties bind these characters tightly and are hard to unravel, and this novel deals realistically with those issues. More than that, the author gives us insight into a culture that too many of us have too little understanding of, or worse, have preconceived ideas about. To see a young Muslim woman in America, living in this world but also a little apart from it, dancing between two cultures, was so valuable to me. And then to see her struggle as she falls in love with the "wrong" man -- not once, but twice... I feel like I learned something about the world as well as reading a love story. I look forward to reading more of Negeen's work and getting her unique insights into the Persian-American experience.
This book is so good. The amazing characters sucked me in from page one, and I really loved the story. It was wonderful to see authentic Persian culture and foods depicted on page. I'm not usually a fan of present tense, but the writing is so phenomenal that it felt natural and helped me feel as if I were in the scene itself. This is not your typical romance, and I loved the unique style, voice, and subject matter. I'll definitely be looking for more from the author. This is a must read.
All in all, I did enjoy this story. Boy, did I get frustrated with Sara! I couldn't figure out WHAT she was doing with Maziar and Ben. I really felt she was unfair to Ben for starting a relationship with him when she couldn't get over Maziar. I'm glad there was a HEA, but it was too much trouble to get to it. It grew tiresome at times trying to figure which way to invest my own emotions.
I enjoyed Forbidden by Faith for its look into Persian family dynamics. Sara, an upper-twenties young woman finishing pharmacy school, meets two men, both forbidden to her by her family. The first, though Persian, was Jewish; the second Caucasian. Sara has an instant attraction to Maziar. She and Maziar break up after acknowledging that their relationship can never progress because of religious differences. Sara, on one hand, was not particularly likable because she uses Ben to fill the void in her life after her relationship with Maziar ends. On the other hand, Sara must be applauded for her efforts at gaining independence from her closely-knit, traditional Persian family and becoming her own person. She, like many second-generation immigrants struggle with the dual identities of their families’ home countries and being American.
